6:00 am
we'll bring you those details coming up. and taking a live look outside, that chopper is overhead this morning of that big rig crash in san leandro. it's thursday, november 29th. this is "today in the bay." straight up 6:00, good morning, everybody. thank you for getting up with us, i'm jon kelley. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. there are new details on breaking news we've been following all morning long. we're learning more about an ongoing manhunt taking place on the peninsula after a woman woke up found a strange man in a mask in her apartment. the manhunt taking place on hawthorne near high street just a few blocks from the palo alto caltrain station, not far from stanford university. marla tellez was the first bay area reporter on the scene. marla, what are police saying? >> reporter: laura, good morning to you. police tell us that this all happened just before 2:30 this morning right at this small apartment complex right at the
6:01 am
corner of high and hawthorne street. you can see crime scene tape still up today as officers are busy inside collecting evidence. they are also busy speaking to neighbors about what they are calling a very serious crime. though i do want to point out right away, the victim, a woman in her 20s, was not hurt. this is according to police. they say she woke to find an intruder, a man wearing dark clothing inside her apartment. she screamed, called 911 and he took off. >> initially we set up a perimeter and we searched with the dogs, searched the area. did not come up with the suspect. but we are going to continue searching for him, but that's going to come from details in the investigation. >> reporter: at this hour just after 6:00 this morning, police tell us they do have officers patrolling local neighborhoods as they search for this suspect. again, all they know at this point is that it's a man wearing dark clothing. so again, information is limited
6:02 am
at this point. as for that woman, i do want to mention she's currently talking to police, so again, she is physically okay but they tell us emotionally she is very shook up, as we all can imagine. they are treating this as an isolated incident and police to be out here at least a couple more hours. live in palo alto, marla tellez, "today in the bay." >> scary scene there. well, a search continues in oakland this morning for a 16-year-old girl considered at risk. cheyenne white walked away from a group home tuesday night. she was last seen near the intersection of international boulevard and 34th avenue. cheyenne is being considered at risk because police say although she's 16 years old, she has the mental capacity of a 9 to 12-year-old. anybody with information on this case is asked to call oak laengt police. an overnight garage fire uncovers a small marijuana grow. fire crews are just leaving the home on men low drive near the
6:03 am
corner of camden avenue and almaden expressway. a person living there reported the fire around 2:00 this morning. when crews arrived, they found five marijuana plants on fire. as of now, no arrests have been made. the man who lives in the home says he has a medical marijuana kaur card for his health problems and was growing the pot to treat a number of different ailments. fire crews say an overloaded circuit may have sparked the tire. this morning a nice little break in the weather but this will not last for long. take a live look outside right now over san francisco, the palace of fine arts. this morning a calm -- period of calm sandwiched between two storms. the first storm, that one hit the bay area yesterday morning sending trees toppling down, including this one right here that practically sliced a home in half up in mendocino county. we're told a little girl actually woke up to find that tree in her bedroom. what a wakeup call. fortunately nobody was hurt.
6:04 am
meantime, the santa cruz mountains, the wet weather has been making driving conditions extremely dangerous on highway 17. several crashes reported including this one involving a cargo van that spun out on that slick pavement and that created the chain reaction there. today it is double duty for many road crews as they clean up after yesterday's mess and prepare for that second storm set to hit this afternoon. this morning we have a team in place to cover everything for you to watch the weather and the traffic. mike inouye will do that, meteorologist christina loren is watching the skies all morning long. mike's got your drive. christina has the forecast. we'll start off, however, with bob redell live in san jose with a look at how the south bay right now is getting set for the next round of rain and wind. bob, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, jon. not only a second but a third storm as well. we have two more storms that are going to be hitting the bay area. one the first one will be hitting the north bay this afternoon and slowly will be
6:05 am
making its way down here to the south bay lingering until saturday afternoon. then it's around that time that this third storm will be coming and it will be going on until sunday. christina loren will have more information on that. of course with these storms will be bringing more rain. you add on top of that the rain received yesterday. the ground will become more saturated. the question is will you need to be piggicking up sand bags. if you live in an area florida t that floods, the answer is yes. if you live on a street that drains slowly, that could be an issue because we're going to be getting hit with back-to-back storms. in places like san jose, city workers are busy. they checked every one of the city's 26 storm water pumps to make sure they're working okay and they tell us they're ready to pump out rainwater from low-lying areas if need be. >> in the event that it does get more severe, we have crews on
6:06 am
standby, crews ready to go and we'll be there ready to respond. >> reporter: we were fortunate during yesterday's storm because the damage was minimal. as we mentioned before, there were a few downed trees and power lines and car accidents. no real need for sandbags here. you can check for your local agency, whether it's county or city to find out where they have sandbags. this is typical of most places of the bay area and they are free for your use. reporting live here in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." let's continue our weather coverage as we take a look at the forecast and when the next storm will hit. checking now with meteorologist christina loren. >> hey, good morning to you. yeah, you have a few hours to get outdoors, especially here in the south bay. we're actually going to get 12 hours of dry weather before the next significant rainfall returns. the north bay, you're fair game for those showers pretty much all day long and then we'll get the bulk of the moisture
6:07 am
tonight. san rafael getting a little light precipitation at this point. the same for areas north of santa rosa. in san rafael, you picked up almost an inch of rain yesterday with an additional 2 inches on the way as we head throughout tonight and our next moisture-rich system comes on shore. yesterday's system was more of a wind event and the next two are packing a lot of rain. our ground is already saturated. yesterday's storm is rather strong. we're expecting an additional 2 inches from the next storm and then two more waves of heavy rain coming through saturday into sunday. that could bring your totals up to 7 inches. more rain on the way on wednesday of next week could bring your totals up closer to 10 inches and that's a lot of rain. so seize the day. 64 degrees inland but you will have opportunities to get outdoors and rake those leaves. there's more falling with strong winds in the forecast as well. 62 bayside. at the coast you'll be at about 62 degrees at 4:00 p.m. and then we'll track our next system
6:08 am
which arrives in santa rosa at about 5:00 tonight. this is in your next report. seven-day outlook is ready to go. first let's check on the drive. you have a traffic alert this morning? >> a couple of things to let folks know about. the bay bridge, of course the metering lights being on, a big issue as far as the volume of traffic coming into the area. it's a little heavier right now. and also a wind advisory for the bay bridge. also in the east bay, our chopper is over a surface street in san leandro. they're over 14th at 163rd in the ashland area around san leandro and just off of 238 and 580, very close to the castro valley y. there's activity going on with earlier footage as well. there's a big rig truck there that's really smashed up that is affecting the traffic just at that local intersection. the freeways themselves are okay but a lot of flashing lights. we'll see how surface street traffic is affected because 14th through the area right by the united auto center sign is definitely affected through the
6:09 am
area. but light traffic right now. we'll watch this and see how long it will take. we'll see how it affects your commute through that portion of the east bay. another live shot showing san jose starting to pick up the volume at north 101. some slowing from 680 up to the airport. also another live look outside shows you fremont. this is 880 with that volume really target to build just south of the dumbarton bridge over the last few minutes as well. we'll follow this and also some damp conditions. i'll show you those coming up. 6:09. coming up, the crisis in egypt. the speedy decision that could bring massive political protests to a quick finish. just a few minutes ago the british government released a scathing report into the phone hacking case. we'll take a look at who was affected coming up. and a wild night for san francisco police officers who somehow escaped injuries after a wanted federal parolee slammed right into their patrol car. we'll tell you what happened next and how they caught him. and from the red carpet to a jail cell. more bad news for lindsay lohan, behind bars overnight.

new this morning, a tense standoff as the san francisco s.w.a.t. team moves into a neighborhood putting it on lockdown overnight. this morning federal charged now facing a suspect who stood his ground for hours against police. the investigation just wrapping up now on holly park circle in san francisco's bernal heights neighborhood. christie smith is live outside the san francisco county jail with the explosive conclusion to it all. good morning. >> good morning to you. that's where that san francisco-year-old san francisco man is waking up in the county jail. he had just been released from federal prison when he got into a violent altercation with san francisco police last night that involved cars and the chase.
6:13 am
he was holed up in a building. it finally ended thanks to an anonymous tip. that man had barricaded himself inside the home on appleton street and s.w.a.t. cruise had to use flash bangs before it ended. officers spotted a man on federal parole woman oith an outstanding warrant in a green mustang. he sped off and hit a patrol car. the officers were okay. that car later found abandoned across town. then a break. a tip that he was in a home. police brought out their crisis negotiation team, s.w.a.t. team, canine units to try to end it all peacefully. >> officers responded, set up that perimeter, formulated a plan. once they made contact with the suspect, he surrendered peacefully so very fortunate that he did so. >> reporter: that man is from san francisco and police say he
6:14 am
has gang ties. he was in prison for firearms violations. he had failed to show up to a meeting with his parole officers. now, he was booked into jail late last night so police are expected to release more information later this morning including his identity. reporting live in san francisco, christiemith, "today in the bay." it is 6:14 right now. we have a quick check of the day's top stories. the writers of egypt's new constitution say they will start voting on a final draft sometime day. president mohamed morsi says the country needs a new constitution to stop the escalating riots there, but critics say pushing a constitution through too quickly will only make matters worse. one of the three men convicted has been denied parole. he will be eligible again in three years. he was convicted for kidnapping the students and their bus driver back in 1976 and burying them alive in a moving van.

fresh off getting her liz taylor movie simply crushed by critics, more bad news for lindsay lohan. she has been arrested again. police say the actress hit a woman during an argument early this morning. lohan stands charged with third-degree assault. speaking of tabloids and stars, british government just a few minutes ago released a scathing report into the phone hacking scandal. >> that's right. reporters for rupert murdoch's chain of newspapers that hacked into voice mails of hollywood stars and sadly victims of extremely violent crimes. scott, a sad story here. >> it is. the whole thing just enraged great britain. the worst violation was when reporters from "news of the world" accessed the voice mail of a little girl who had been abducted, she was feared dead. when the voice mail was accessed, it led the parents to believe she was arrilive and sh was not. this morning a report by the british commission calls for a

minutes ago we got the latest gdp numbers. the u.s. economy grew 2.7% in the july to september quarter. that's better than expected. >> all right, scott, thank you very much. good vibrations there. right now we are watching that weather as we get a little break before a second storm heads right here to the bay area. >> time to check in with meteorologist christina loren. >> a very active forecast continues. good morning to you. the first week of december is going to be kind of rough across the bay area. start with this live picture over san francisco where we don't have any fog. no rainfall in this area. yesterday we had three-hour flight delays, so the good news for travelers is it looks like flights are leaving on time this morning. we'll continue to track that for you. we have a lot of cloud cover overhead. you'll notice that as soon as the sun comes up over the next 30 minutes. then as we head throughout the day today, those clouds will thicken up as this front starts to drop to the south and gets closer and closer to the bay area. we're not expecting our first
6:18 am
significant rainfall even up in the north bay until 5:00 p.m. tonight. that's when the yellows and oranges start to arrive. we continue that futurecast and stop it at 5:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. that's when the front starts to move to the south. it brings pockets of moderate and heavy rainfall from fairfield to concord all the way down south to western san jose. so by 10:00 a.m. friday, showers start to lighten up just a little bit. you'll get pretty showery activity all the way through friday and saturday but it will be very light. you'll have opportunities to get outdoors before our next wave of heavy rain arrives saturday morning. what's very coincidental about these storm systems is the heaviest rainfall in the morning hours and overnight as well so your evenings are actually looking pretty good for the next few days. we stop the clock at 9:00 p.m. on saturday. that's when our next heavier round of rain arrives. not much drying out time between these storm systems so keep that in mind. we are expecting localized flooding. the best thing you can do is clear out your storm drain and travel cautiously for the next few days because it's also going
6:19 am
to be rather blustery with strong winds on the way. 64 degrees in livermore. showers hold off until 5:00 p.m. in the north bay. 63 in fremont, 62 in san jose, so it's a good day to get outdoors and take care of any activity that you need to before our next strong round of rain arrives. that means, hey, you can turn your sprinklers off. just give them a break as we head throughout the next week or so with a lot of rain on the way. bring in anything from the outdoors you don't want to get drenched. it's always a good idea to try to eliminate that standing water whenever you can, even though it's not warm enough for mosquitos, they're still out there. they're just dormant because of the cooler weather. 61 degrees saturday into sunday. 58 degrees on sunday. it's going to be cold and rainy as you make your way to church. monday, tuesday, wednesday, we'll see sunshine but more rain on the way. we have one little batch on tuesday night, then heavier rain on the way wednesday into thursday. i.e. keep that umbrella handy. mike, you've got a myriad of things happening out there this
6:20 am
morning. >> thank you for not being rainy today. we do have a lighter flow of traffic but a couple of issues going on. the castro valley y starting to pack in the commute right now. and right in the same area we're talking about 14th at 163rd. that's in the ashland area, san leandro. let me get out of your way and show the video the chopper took. it was dramatic footsage. all these cars smashed up at the united auto center. there's a big rig, flatbed tows and all of these trucks smashed there. no injuries. the roadway only closed for a couple of lanes right at that portion of that one block by that business so that's better news. dramatic pictures, but a smoother flowing commute. so we'll take you back to the roadways now. thank you for that chopper footage. we'll go over toward the castro valley y. typical pattern right here. we also have some slowing as you might expect through livermore, west 580. not a problem through pleasanton and into sunol but that will build and we'll have a thursday slowdown coming closer to 7:30 to 8:00. the south bay itself moves smoothly as well but we have
6:21 am
that slowdown kicking in and that one will stick for the morning heading up toward 880 and the airport. 87 really slow as you're approaching kirtner and heading into downtown. we saw the early burst where both of those freeways are slow so that's a heavier volume through that portion of the south bay heading up towards 17 from 85. that may be a problem much of the morning as well. give you a live look outside. over here on the peninsula, a nice smooth drive for 101. not a problem. the volume increases but speeds close to the limit between palo alto and the city through san mateo. i think we have one more live shot to show you guys as we look at the bay bridge toll plaza. wee end with this packed toll plaza itself. the metering lights are on but the span itself moves smoothly. there is a wind advisory across the bay bridge, so keep that in mind and hold on tight. back to you. it is 6:22 right now. coming up, we all know brian wilson's beard is black lit rafbly. figuratively it's black and orange. could it be blue by next week? rumors the beard may be on the move to an arch rival's roster.

right now we want to update you on breaking news we've been following this morning on the peninsula. a manhunt continues after a palo alto woman wakes up overnight to find a strange man in her house. police are there searching that area near high and hawthorne just two blocks from the palo alto caltrain station and near the stanford university campus. marla tellez has been out there all morning long talking to police and neighbors this morning. marla, what are you hearing? >> reporter: well, jon, to be honest police and neighbors aren't saying very much. i just spoke to one guy who came home, he lives right here at the corner of high and hawthorne at this apartment complex. he came home after a night of working and he was obviously very surprised by what he found, all this police activity here. now, police are calling this crime very serious and rare. they say a woman woke up to find
6:45 am
a man inside her apartment about 2:20 this morning. she screamed and called 911. that's when he took off. police say the woman, though, was not hurt. they say she's in her 20s. right now what they're doing is they are investigating how the suspect, how he got inside, if he took anything from her apartment. also the specific circumstances about their initial encounter. when she woke to find him there. in the meantime, he is on the run. >> she's currently safe with police officers unharmed and that's the good news. the best description i have right now is just a male wearing dark clothing. >> reporter: so you heard it right there, the description of the suspect is very limited. a man wearing dark clothing. now, police have already conducted a canine search, very thorough canine search in this area here right at high and hawthorne. we're just a couple of blocks removed from university avenue, so it's a really good neighborhood in fact.
6:46 am
a mile and a half from stanford university. they say that the canine search did not turn up anything. as for that woman, again, she is physically okay, though as we can all imagine, emotionally she is very shook up. and they are calling this an isolated incident. live in palo alto, marla tellez, "today in the bay." this morning we are also watching the weather, as we give you a live look at san rafael this morning. 101 where the north bay is expected to get slammed with more rain as we wait for a second storm to roll through. the storm is spreading throughout the bay area as well. no one was injured, but damage certainly done in redwood city. winds toppled a tree right on top of a pickup truck parked in front of a house near wood side high school. conditions haven't been much better in san jose where several crashes were reported, including this one when a minivan lost control, flipped onto its side on highway 87 near the 101 interchange. right now we are getting a break
6:47 am
from the rain, but just for a little while. this morning we have a team in place to watch the weather. mike inouye and meteorologist christina loren watching your morning drive and forecast, but let's begin with bob redell live in san jose with a look at how the south bay is getting ready for the next round of rain and wind. bob? >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. yes, we have two more storms coming in, one later today, another one on saturday. i'll let christina handle the details on this. the question is am i going to need sandbags for this round of wet weather. if you live in an area that typically floods, typically, then the answer is possible, yes, our meteorologists predict there will be a risk of flooding along some creeks or let's say you live on a street or in an area that typically drains slowly for whatever reason, that could be an issue because we are going to be getting hit back-to-back with these storms and give little time for the drains to catch up with that. why is why elaine and ramon stopped by to pick up ten
6:48 am
sandbags. they lived at their home long enough to know that storms like these can cause problems in the back of their house. >> it's just a back patio, sometimes the water rises up to the slider door and will come underneath. we're just basically taking one layer to keep the water out of the tv room. >> based on your experience and knowing how much rain -- >> maybe by sunday because of the second storm and, you know, it doesn't drain out that well on the back patio. so we're just concerned that the second storm bill dump extra rain. >> reporter: the city of san jose itself is also getting prepared. yesterday city workers were checking every one of the city's 26 storm water pumps to make sure they're working okay and they tell us they are ready to pump out rainwater from low-lying areas if that becomes necessary. now, the south bay isn't the only place that offers free sandbags. this is typical of most county or city agencies throughout the bay area. you just want to check. they're usually available for free pickup here in san jose.

it's actually being provided, this service, by the santa clara valley water district. reporting live here in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thanks, bob. continuing our weather coverage right now, let's take a look at that forecast and check in when that next storm will hit. let's find out from meteorologist christina loren. >> oh, we are going to be in the thick of it all the way throughout the coming weekend. we'll get a couple dry breaks monday into tuesday and more rain on the way wednesday into thursday so overall keeping rain chances in the forecast for at least the next ten days. taking a live look, beautiful conditions, it's overcast. you might have to use your windshield wipers for 5 to 10 minutes. pesky showers along the peninsula. everything is light. the bulk of the moisture from the next system still situated over eureka, starting to push in right now and you can see there's a lot of rain embedded within the green. you see the yellow and the red. it's going to take its time getting here. now, winds are still rather active, especially in oakland. we're sustained at 17 miles per hour. so although the national weather
6:50 am
service says we don't need a wind advisory for today, you could get caught by a strong gust from time to time. really travel cautiously as our highways have not had all that much time to dry out just yet and they won't have much more time before the bulk of the moisture comes in at 6:00 p.m. that front will drape to the south and heavy rainfall over the greater bay area will continue until 11:00 a.m. showers start to lighten up, on and off turning spotty for the rest of the day on friday. the next rounding of heavy rain arrives at 1:00 p.m. on saturday and we are going to get a lot of rain over the course of saturday and sunday. you already want to plan on staying indoors this weekend. hey, it means you can stay indoors with your family, make some stew, all the things that cold weather provides. it's always nice to sit next to the fireplace as well. 64 in san jose and 65 in los gatos. so the next two systems are packing some winds. we are concerned about the potential for more trees to go down. we'll track to tha for you.
6:51 am
check in and see how your commute is shaping up before you head out tomorrow because it will be active. saturday and sunday temperatures are going to be cold. we'll see rain. monday and tuesday a couple days where we have mostly dry conditions. late wednesday into thursday, more rain on the way. 6:51. it's a beautiful sunrise out there and our highways are a little bit on the dry side, mike, but you're already tracking several incidents, huh? >> thank goodness because the earlier accidents we had haven't been complicated. those mostly cleared. right here you're looking past the coliseum. this is the northbound side. look at this, as far as our camera shot goes, and this is past 98 and heading down toward hag hagenberger very slow. our shopper just north of here was showing us the overpass, fruitvale, north 880 at the fruitvale overpass. if they get their signal back, maybe we can show you. there it is. there's the flares, there's the chp vehicle. here are all the folks getting around them. this is the third lane and

here's chp. you know what, a freeway service patrol truck has arrived but this is the rig that is disabled. now, i don't know if this small tow truck will be enough to take it off the roadway. if not we'll have to wait until another truck comes through this backup. we'll continue to update you on that. use 580 as your all the nternat now. the bay bridge we're seeing a slightly lighter volume of traffic because of all those folks being held up out of oakland. still, emeryville shows the volume coming down the berkeley curve so you're not out of the woods at the toll plaza. some folks might head south and that's a good option. head to the san mateo bridge and that will take you over the water as well. look at all this westbound traffic pushing across the flat section. it's going to get a little heavier probably the next half hour. we'll track that as well. farther south, the south bay shows your northbound routes, northbound 101 really kicking in. capital heading up towards tully
6:53 am
and from 680 up toward the airport. 87 had an early start to the slowdown and that continues. that's going to be a problem all the way up into downtown. here's 85 with a slow stretch up to saratoga and continuing up into cupertino. we've seen this happen over the last few days. we'll watch and see and let you know. and we'll end with the north bay shot because the peninsula is not a problem. the southbound traffic builds coming out of novato but we still have that. you still see water and puddles on the side of the road. that might be an issue at your on and off-ramps and the north bay will get hit with rain first so more warnings for this evening's commute for sure. new this morning, a suspect squares off with with a s.w.a.t. team for hours putting a neighborhood in lockdown for much of the night. this morning federal charges now facing a suspect who stood his ground for hours against police. it's all unholding at holly park circle in san francisco's bernal heights neighborhood. christey smi ie smith is live o the san francisco jail with a

dramatic ending to it all. >> reporter: good morning to you. after all that, that man is waking up in the san francisco county jail where we are. he's a federal parolee and last night san francisco police tried to stop him. he ended up ramming their patrol car. as you said there was a long standoff. eventually, they arrested him, but it didn't come easy. s.w.a.t. officers had to use a flash bang type device after they received a tip that this man, who had just been released from federal prison, was in a home on appleton street. they had been searching for him for hours. it started late afternoon on monterey boulevard when officers spotted this guy, knew he was wanted and he didn't meet with his parole officer. he sped off, hit a patrol car. those officers okay. police tried to find him, they couldn't. >> officers from engle side station responded to the area. they were able to confirm the presence of the suspect in that residence and called in the tactical team. the police department's tactical

team and crisis negotiators responded to the scene. a perimeter was set up. when the police department made contact with that suspect, he surrendered peacefully without further incident. >> so it was an anonymous tip that led them to him. he's 24 years old from san francisco. police say he has gang ties, last in prison for gun violations. now, because he was arrested so late last night, investigators are expected to release more information after 9:00 this morning, including his name. reporting live in san francisco, christie smith, "today in the bay." new this morning, a mountain climber in oregon right now is safe this morning after an overnight rescue operation and he's happy about that. the climber was on his way down after summiting mt. hood bh he was stranded in a snowstorm yesterday afternoon. now, he was able to call search and rescue on his cell phone. the man was not hurt but he was cold and he was wet. rescuers were able to bring him food and dry clothes before finally bringing him down to safety. that happened early this morning. 6:56.

nasa this morning telling the press to cool its jets. >> there has been a lot of hype surrounding this space agency announcing something historic right here in san francisco on monday. scott mcgrew, that word "historic" it's relative, right? >> yeah, it is. good morning. a nasa scientist with the mars curiosity program told a reporter a while back curiosity was going to make history and that's no doubt true. but historic is, you know, for nasa scientists can be pretty big but for the rest of us kind of obscure. so that word "historic" gained more and more power as it bounced around the echo chamber of the internet. nasa this morning trying to downplay expectations. we'll know monday, but you can probably put away your welcome sign for martians. turning to the markets, fran drescher there in the middle opening the nasdaq. the u.s. economy grew 2.7% in the latest quarter, better than expected. markets feeling pretty good about the fiscal cliff. however, we got the latest numbers from stores. macy's, target, kohl's, all reporting lower than expected
